Stitching for Self-Care: Reflections on Sustainable Practices for Craft and Activism

This short film documents one woman’s search for a sustainable practice of making and activism. Verity Byth is an Australian textile artist practicing at the intersection of feminism, finance and fabric. The film describes how she found a balance between stitching for subversion and stitching for self-care in her installation “Prayers for Rising Out of Patriarchy”. Combining chant and ceremony from a female Buddhist lineage, with her own lineage of subsistence stitchers, and inspiration from social media, Verity offers this glimpse into the healing power of one of the world’s oldest textile arts
