Design
Creativity is its own energy source. The butterfly in this piece represents the creative lifecycle. A tiny glimpse of an idea lies hidden in a cocoon until it can grow and find open air. When it’s ready, it becomes a beautiful creature, capable of flight.
The life cycle is short — but captivating. It leaves its wake the seed of a new idea, and the metamorphosis begins again.
Fabric
The splashy bright colours shouted ‘creative’ at me. I wanted to feature a blue lotus in the design, to capture the woman’s spiritual tradition, but in the end, was happy to go with the splashes of blue in this fabric.
The prototype for this coat was hand-painted, but the painted surface was just too stiff to sit well on the mannequin. I persisted with it long after the time I had allocated had run out. In a panic, I ran to the local furniture fabric outlet and found this exuberant, colourful, full bodied cloth.
