Abundance

Role Model Mindset: There is plenty for all

Remnant fabric, custom-printed ribbon

My father was a headmaster. He was the breadwinner.

He was working class, the youngest, the only one in his family who got educated. He was never worried about money.

He was working, so there was always money coming in.

Design

It had taken longer than expected to arrive, and so the whole design was more a prototype version than a production version.

Sometimes this is the best way: the idea comes to life without too much fussing. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, as Elizabeth Gilbert says, it’s “big magic”.

Because my sewing machine broke on the day before installation, this was the last coat to be made, and all the seams were sewn by hand.

The main design element was the custom printed silver ribbon with the text “My Money, My Way: My Decisions, My Interests, My Rights, My Responsibilities”.

Fabric

The soft crinkle and pleating gives it life, the metallic thread adds a subtle glimmer and the weight of it helps it hold that tumble and swirl on the floor. When the story arrived to animate it, I knew that it would carry the full idea of the abundance of our common wealth.

I chose the fabric for this coat before I knew about the story. It had a lovely drape in my hand, even when it was on a dusty roll amongst the other junky fabrics. I just wanted to unfurl it into piles on a floor and gaze at it.
